As you may know, I have spent a lot of time knocking on doors and talking to voters like you at your doorsteps. I really enjoy this, because I get a glimpse into who you are, and what your values are. The other night while I was in Hudson, I spoke with a family that started asking me about my wife and family. Before our conversation ended, the mom said, "Come back to our house before you leave the neighborhood; I will have something for you in our driveway."
I finished walking the neighborhood and went back to their house. In the drive were three sacks. One was filled with apples; the other two contained gifts for my wife and me. That made my day - in fact, it made my whole month!
Last night, when I knocked at another door, the owner opened the door and said, "Hi Walt! You don't remember me, do you?" I said, "No, I'm sorry, but please help me remember." She reminded me that she was the mother of one of my friends from high school. That sparked a great "remember when" discussion! She is a democrat, but she told me, "Walt, my daughter and I have followed you and we fully support you and are praying you win. We need your values in Des Moines!"
Running for Iowa House involves a lot of hard work, but at the same time it's very rewarding! If I end up at your doorstep in the next few weeks, I hope we can have a good discussion into your values and what Iowa needs. That is what this race is about, and I look forward to hearing what you have to say.
